Pot Feeder Chemical or Chemical Shot Feeder

One method for chemical metering is shot feed or pot feed of chemical. Shot feeding should not be confused with shock feeding chemical, where chemical is dosed into a process in large quantity over a short period.

In a pot feed or shot feed system, chemical is introduced through the use of a by-pass feed system. This is a small pressure vessel that is able to by pass part of the fluid to be treated through it. In some chemical water treatment feeders the entire process flow is passed through the pot chemical feeder for a short period then returning to a regular flow that does not include the pot chemical feeder.

Typical applications for pot feeder chemical systems are closed loop cooling systems or condensers that only need to introduce chemicals occasionally based on evaporation or fluid loss. The most common applications are for the introduction of oxidizing biocides, or corrosion inhibitors.

Chemical shot feeders can also be used on open systems as a shock feed system. Most applications are used for small closed loop systems as chemical addition is almost nil. The pot chemical feeder is a low cost alternative to other metering systems and effective in many applications, the drawbacks however prevent its use for applications where the chemical requires precise metering.

When looking for equipment for you chemical water treatment program make sure that the equipment material is compatible with the chemical. most pot feeders are used to introduce oxidizing materials to the process. This can be dangerous as the pot chemical feeder also requires the operator to depressurize and repressurize the vessel. If the material is weakened from exposure to an oxidizing agent like a biocide there is a chance for vessel failure.

Furthermore, all pot chemical feed system applications require manual intervention to load the feeder. It is good safety practice to limit chemical handling on any application.
